Malcolm Brown Skipper of the CapellaThe Skipper

Malcolm Brown has been a seaman and fisherman ever since he left school. Like many a Westray man before him, he spent two years in the Merchant Navy, sailing to such exotic places as New Zealand, North and South America and North Africa.

A career change saw him moving to North East Scotland to work on various fishing vessels. After gaining his skipper's qualification at Robert Gordon College in Aberdeen, he went on to sail as mate and relief skipper. In 1975, together with his brother-in-law, he purchased his own vessel and moved back to Westray where he fished successfully on three different vessels, until selling the last one in 1998.

The past five years has seen Malcolm sailing as cook and relief mate on Scotland's largest stern trawler, the 43 metre Shetland Sunbeam, working Icelandic and Faroese waters for up to two month voyages.

Malcolm is a skilled seaman with an intimate knowledge of the local waters. His lifelong interest in wildlife has been instrumental in his decision to embark on a new venture, Pierowall Charters, supported by his wife Nancy, who will be able to answer many queries when Malcolm is out on the Capella.
