Capella at Gill PierMV Cappella

The MV Capella is a 10.7 metre GRP Mitchell Sea Angler. A robust and seaworthy craft, she is specially fitted out to suit her new life as a charter and sea angling boat.

The Capella is full MCA compliant for fire fighting and life saving regulations and is certified for 10 passengers and 2 crew.

Down below there is a small well-appointed cabin. Here a DVD is available, showing scenes of local interest. A toilet is accessed off the port side of the cabin. There is seating for 10 people under cover in case of poor weather.

There are several pairs of binoculars on board for passenger use.

Complimentary tea, coffee, homebakes and sandwiches are served on board during every trip and soup is served on evening excursions.

Malcolm Brown Skipper of the CapellaMalcolm Brown, skipper of the Capella

Malcolm Brown has been a seaman and fisherman ever since he left school. Like many a Westray man before him, he spent two years in the Merchant Navy, sailing to such exotic places as New Zealand, North and South America and North Africa.

A career change saw him moving to North East Scotland to work on various fishing vessels. After gaining his skipper's qualification at Robert Gordon College in Aberdeen, he went on to sail as mate and relief skipper. In 1975, together with his brother-in-law, he purchased his own vessel and moved back to Westray where he fished successfully on three different vessels, until selling the last one in 1998.

Five years prior to him acquiring the MV Capella, he sailed as cook and relief mate on Scotland's largest stern trawler, the 43 metre Shetland Sunbeam, working Icelandic and Faroese waters for up to two month voyages.

Malcolm is a skilled seaman with an intimate knowledge of the local waters. His lifelong interest in wildlife was instrumental in his decision to embark on his new venture, Pierowall Charters, supported by his wife Nancy, who will answer any queries when Malcolm is out on the Capella.
